Colors of the season: Navy Blue

Happy fall, fashion lovers! I hope you are enjoying the weather wherever you may live. I am ready for it to get cool enough that I can start wearing my sweaters!

I am enjoying the new colors that are huge this season! So I thought I would dedicate some posts to each of the hot colors for fall. This post is all about navy blue - always a classic color. It's nice to see some of the cute things people are doing with navy blue. (some of the pictures below are from Pinterest).

Lovin the "school girl" look right now - lots of navy blues and reds out there!

Love the idea of a navy dress with a wide ivory belt!

Currently drooling over the trench. And I love the green accents!

Nordstrom jacket. Didn't bother looking at the price, but look at the detail on this jacket! So cute!

All in all, navy is an essential color for your fall 2012 wardrobe. It's a great base color for all the other colors that are in right now.

(if only I could find a pair of navy shoes that I really liked!)

Pleats

I love pleats. They are so perfect! The design of a pleat allows for such a graceful flow. Pleats dress stuff up, whether a jean skirt or a dress skirt. Pleats are very flattering for any body type.

More Pinterest pictures!

Look at how slimming those pleats are! Sure, it's on a skinny model, but still!

I love that both of these pictures show a flowy, very feminine skirt paired with a more casual top - a button up shirt and a jean jacket.

Look at the jean jacket in this picture. She has the sleeves turned up once, and has the collar turned up. Very stylish combined with the long sleeve button up shirt she has underneath.

I love the fact that she's wearing heels with the jean jacket.

Oh yeah, and just remember this: if you are carrying a Starbucks cup and wearing sunglasses, YOU ARE FASHIONABLE! :)

Striped maxis - transition to fall!

Stripes are in. Striped maxi skirts are the skirt to have! See the attached pictures for inspiration.

Since it is fall, I know that most people are thinking about fall clothes. I love the second picture - pairing the striped maxi with boots and a fall-styled jacket for an autumn look. Won't work if you live in a very cold part of the world, but for those of you who live in places where autumn is mild, this is super cute!

The last picture shows a short skirt, but the idea is still awesome! Pair the striped, knit skirt with a nice blazer in a fun color!

These skirts are versatile - great for work, church or vacation! Pair it with a sweater, jacket or button-up shirt (belted - oooo!) and flats, boots or TOMS for work. For church, a nice jacket, color-coordinating shoes (flats or semi-casual heels), and a cute clutch. For vacation, wear it with flip flops, a big hobo bag, a loose-fitting shirt (belted), and a hat!

One of the best things about these skirts is how inexpensive they are - they can be found at Target and Old Navy, for roughly $15-20 or at Nordstrom and other places if you want to spend more.

Revamp!

Ever been in this position?
- that really cute/cheap skirt is too short! Maybe it's long enough, but you need/want it to be longer for various reasons (I need my skirts longer for work purposes)

An answer to the problem? Revamp it!

Here are some ideas that can help you revamp the skirt. I've done this on skirts and it adds a certain zing to skirts! I've only done it with cotton print skirts, but this can be done with other materials.

- add a border. If its a print skirt, get a solid color material. You can add a plain border, or pleat it! The pleats really look awesome and get a ton of compliments!

- cut and add. Instead of adding a border on the end, add a border in the middle! Cut 3-5 inches off the bottom of your skirt, add a solid color border to the skirt, then add the 3-5 inches of fabric onto the end of the skirt. it creates a little bit of a color blocking affect. I did this once with a wide piece of ribbon - it adds such a great element!

Do you have a great way to revamp a skirt?

Hairdos

Ok these are some hairdos I saw on Pinterest that I would love to learn to do!

Sorry about the shoulders. It looks simple enough, but I know it's gotta be harder than it looks!

This waterfall braid thing is huge right now - wish I knew how to do it. I can't even French braid!

Cute messy approach! Not quite sure where I would put the extra hair, since they just loop it up here, and my hair is way longer than that. Of course, I don't know how to do this kind of braid either.

Messy bun. It's so much harder than it looks - it takes a lot of work to get that perfect "I didn't do anything with this hair" look.

Jean Jacket Jive!

I will admit to having 4 different jean jackets in my closet. White, faded jean, black jean, and dark blue jean. I wear 'em all the time.

There's a couple different types of jean jackets. My faded jean jacket is extremely casual, while my dark blue jean jacket has scalloped edges and no pockets or bulky buttons, so it dresses up nicely.

Jean jackets are the "it" item of the season - as well as jean shirts. Go to any store and you'll see jean jackets and shirts galore. Forever 21 has a TON of options right now that are fairly inexpensive, so you have no excuse!

Here are some fun things to do with jean jackets!

- Roll up the sleeves of your jean jacket and pair with a pair of TOMS or flip flops and a broomstick skirt

- Pair your jean jacket with a printed cotton skirt and flats for a dressy-casual look for work

- Put a striped maxi skirt with a jean jacket for a fun picnic day

- Plaid looks great with jean and boots for an autumn look

- Want a chic cowgirl look? Pair a ruffled white button-up shirt, belt, fluffy skirt, boots, hat and jean jacket! Button the middle button on the jean jacket so the ruffles from the shirt pop out the top!

Watches

I like watches. The perfect watch is the perfect accessory. I currently wear a white fossil, but I'm always eyeing watches. Saw this on Pinterest and am currently salivating over it.

If only it didn't have all that gold on it. If only I had an outfit to wear with it.

If only I could justify spending $200+ on a Michael Kors watch.

Kiddo Fashion

Found these pictures on Pinterest. I love these for little munchkins!

This headband was on etsy. I would like it minus the Swarovski crystals.

Also on etsy. However, I think it would be super easy to do this - just replace the laces with ribbon, etc. That would make it easy to customize the shoes for different outfits. Have the shoe ribbons match the outfit and hairbow!

Nautical = classy and cute! Add red shoes, a red hairbow and a red purse!

Stinkin cute!

I want...

I want a headband like this. It would be easy enough to make, I suppose. Just look at how cute it is! It reminds me of a treble clef in music!

Cleaning my TOMS

This is a unique cleaning solution, as my TOMS in need of cleaning were white.

The difficulty with cleaning TOMS is the fact that they have a canvas body and a leather sole. I would throw them in the washer if they didn't have that leather sole - leather and water don't go really well together.

Anyway, I was frustrated because my white ones had gotten sooo dirty very quickly. I told someone, "just think, I paid $45 for these shoes, and the white lasted 3 weeks!" Well, when I got some grass stains on them (really, I'm not careless - just thoughtless), I decided to do something about them. I figured they were already ruined, so I didn't have much to lose.

Since my shoes were white (originally), I grabbed my Clorox bleach pen, and got to work. The directions for the bleach pen say to wash immediately, but since I was trying to avoid getting the leather part wet, I went for hand washing in the sink. Tip the shoe upside down and rinse the bleach out without getting the sole wet. Briskly rub the canvas with your fingers to get the bleach out, then use an old towel to towel dry the shoes.

I tried to be careful about not getting the leather sole wet, but it didn't work out that way. The leather got wet.

Because the leather got wet, I had to get creative. I figured letting the leather air dry wasn't the best idea, so I grabbed my hair dryer and started blowing. I didn't completely dry the soles, but I got them mostly dry.

After getting a jump start on the drying process, I let them dry overnight. The shoes aren't perfectly white, but they look 50 times better than they did before I washed them. They were slightly snug after washing, (the canvas shrunk a little), but after a little bit of wearing, they went back to their comfy fit.

Something I wish I had done: when I bought the white TOMS, the salesgirl suggested getting some of that spray-on shoe stuff that gives shoes water resistance, etc. She said that would help the shoes to resist dirt, also. I didn't do it, because I think it smells funny, and besides, I wanted to wear my new shoes RIGHT NOW. Next time, I'm soo doing that - it probably would have saved me a lot of work!

TOMS

Hello everyone,

Today I thought I'd talk about my new favorite shoe to wear - TOMS. If you have not yet bought yourself a pair, allow me to point some things out about TOMS.

1- they are amazingly comfortable
2- they are highly fashionable right now
3- TOMS are versatile; they can be worn to work or around the house (I don't recommend going hiking in them, though)
4- TOMS come in a ton of different colors
5- when you buy a pair of TOMS, a pair of shoes is given to a child in need, you get a cool pair of shoes, (along with the status symbol: "hey, I care about the children"), and you get a TOMS flag and sticker! (ok, not the biggest selling point, but hey, it's kinda cool)
6- did I mention they are comfy???

When you decide to buy a pair of TOMS, here are some tips from a TOMS wearer that will hopefully make your purchasing and breaking in process easier.

1- know what color you want, and check the TOMS website to see how much they are. Nordstrom usually has a good selection, but sometimes are sold out of the color you want - you can always get them from the TOMS website. Also, check Zumiez, PacSun and other places that sell trendy shoes. Some places raise the price a bit, so it's good to know how much they normally go for.

2- Get the right fit. If you get a pair that is too big, they will rub the back of your foot and give you blisters. Plus, the "flopping off your foot every single step" thing is really annoying. When you try on your TOMS, they should be a tight fit. TOMS WILL STRETCH!!!! If they stretch, and become too big, you will have the "flopping off your foot every single step" thing going on. I almost bought a size 8 because the 7.5 was so tight, but the 7.5 stretched out and they are a perfect fit now. Also, don't wear socks when you try them on, unless you plan on wearing socks with them all the time. It will change the sizing.

3- breaking them in. The first few times you wear your TOMS, they will be very tight and uncomfortable, but that's just because they are still getting used to your feet. I wore mine with nylons on for a couple times before going barefoot in them. The nylons give your feet that smooth ability to slip those shoes on a lot easier, and it starts the break in process very nicely for your feet. The nice thing about nylons is that they are so thin that they won't over stretch your shoes, like socks would.

4- Decide: socks or no socks. I personally do not wear socks with my TOMS. I love being able to wear them barefoot - its much more comfy to me. However, no socks has a major drawback - your TOMS and your feet will stink! Currently, mine smell like icky feet! It works out though, because I just don't take the shoes off around people (and I avoid going to houses that have a no-shoes rule lol). I have friends who never wear their TOMS without socks. They wear the little footy socks that you can't see when you have the shoes on. Because they wear socks, they don't have the smell problem. I hate those socks, because they always slip down off the back of my foot.

5- save the thingies that come inside the shoe. I have no idea what they are called, but if your TOMS ever get wet and you need to reshape the front of the shoe, these come in handy to have. They keep the shoe from becoming mashed/deformed in the store.

Next time: my white TOMS needed to be cleaned! What I found that worked... And some things I wish I had tried!

An ode

An ode to my favorite jean skirt

Here's to you, my darling jean skirt
You've been an amazing part of my wardrobe
Your stylishness conformed to my pastor's guidelines
And you kept me modest and comfy
A find like you is such a rarity
And I enjoyed the time we've spent together
All the conferences we've attended together
The boring college classes we've endured
The comfy "jeans and hoody" days we've shared
All this must come to a close
As alas, you've lived a good life
And you've served me well
You've worn yourself out on my behalf
And you are now wholly holey (and therefore no longer holy)
I'll miss you dreadfully
Love, your wearer for the the past 6 years

Psalm 45

I recently read Psalm 45 in my Bible reading, and it got me thinking. Allow me to draw some parallels to apostolic fashion from this chapter in the Word of God.

Psalm 45:11 So shall the king greatly desire thy beauty: for He is thy Lord and worship thou Him.

Psalm 45:13 The king's daughter is all glorious within...

Verse 11 talks about how the king (aka God) desires our beauty! May I draw your attention to three different verses that discuss beauty...

1 Chronicles 16:29 ... Worship the Lord in the beauty of holiness
Psalm 29:2 ... Worship the Lord in the beauty of holiness
Psalm 69:9 worship the Lord in the beauty of holiness...

Holiness is beautiful!!!! Thank the Lord - that's the only chance some of us have to be beautiful! (only kidding). When we receive the Holy Ghost with the evidence of speaking in tongues, we have the Holy Ghost working in our lives, making us holy! We cannot be holy on our own - wearing a dress and doing your hair the apostolic way will not make you holy. Only the Holy Ghost can do that! I am reminded of that old song, "Jesus on the inside, working on the outside, oh what a change in my life!"

God desires us to be holy! Psalm 34:11 says the king greatly desires our beauty (the beauty of holiness). The reason why we should be holy? "For He is thy Lord." and then it gives us a command, "worship thou Him." The three verses that discuss "worship the Lord in the beauty of holiness" make me think that holiness coupled with worship is pretty important to God. In fact, I have always thought of worship and holiness together being beautiful to God. When we worship Him with a holy heart, He flat out LOVES it!

Psalm 45:13 says that the king's daughter is all glorious within. This tells me that the princess is not simply beautiful on the outside - she is a glorious person on the inside as well! Sometimes we focus so much on looking just right on the outside that we forget about being glorious inside. Let me encourage everyone (including myself) to work on being glorious inside. A glorious-within kind of woman (in my mind) is like the Proverbs 31 woman (who just really amazes me - how does she do all that stuff????) as well as bearing the Fruits of the Spirit (love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, meekness, temperance, patience). Next time you're getting all spiffed up for church or a special date night, or maybe just going to the grocery store, remember to put on your glorious inside, as well as your glorious outside! And ask the Lord for help with being glorious inside - if anyone can make you glorious, if would be the King of Glory!

With love to my glorious/beautiful sisters,
A.F.
