Forever 21 has some super cute hair bows right now that are only like $1.50. Very cute bows, if you're into bows. All kinds of different colors :)

Apostolic Fashion is now on Twitter!
Hey everyone! For those of you all that are on Twitter, I have great news! Apostolic Fashion is now on twitter! I would have announced it earlier, but I forgot my password for a couple weeks and was embarrassed to announce the twitter feed if I couldn't remember the password for the feed! So I figured it out tonight (I'm so proud of myself!)

Hair (part 1 of many)
Howdy everyone! Happy New Year! Today's topic is the stuff that grows on our scalp - Hair!
Everyone knows that a good hairdo is essential to being fashionable - a good hairdo can make a mediocre outfit look good. Conversely, a bad hairdo can make a good outfit look dowdy.
To avoid being "preachy-ish" in this posting, I will merely give some tips instead of telling you what I dislike :)
For guys - I don't know about the rest of you lovely ladies out there, but there's something about a guy that has taken time to comb his hair in an attractive manner. A good haircut matters, too. It doesn't matter if your mom or your wife or some professional barber cuts your hair. Find a good haircut that looks good on you! Some guys like it military-length, and some guys like it civilian-length. Hopefully none of our apostolic guys like it too long, though - the Beatles shouldn't be our hair models! :) So guys, after you find a good haircut (hopefully you already have), make sure to find a good way to comb it. Are you going to part the hair on the side, in the middle, or will you slick it straight back? You have a few options on keeping it in place, too. Gel, mousse, and hairspray are a couple options. Gel seems to be what a lot of guys like, but if you don't want the "plastered" look, you might want to go with mousse or hairspray. Mousse doesn't give you a helmet head, but it definitely isn't as strong of a hold. Hairspray seems to be hard to use, because there aren't a lot of hairsprays made for men, so unless you can find a manly or non-scented hairspray, you might be worried about smelling like your wife's hairspray. :)
Girls - our hair is our glory! We all know that. Also, the woman is the glory of her husband, so the woman's hair (if she is married) is doubly important. Most apostolic women already know a lot of tricks for hair, and many of us are stopped all the time on the street and asked if we are hair stylists. Here is a list of the types of hair care products that are available to women: pomades, conditioners, leave-in conditioners, gels, mousses, hair sprays, frizz control sprays, curl enhancing sprays, softening creams, body boosting mousses, the list goes on and on. I was at Wal-Mart the other night, getting shampoo and conditioner, and TreSemme' has about 15 different types of shampoos and conditioners! I got the Deep Cleansing kind this time - it says it will take care of the residue left over from mousses, gels, and hairsprays. We'll see :) Anyway, I digress. I don't use a lot of these kinds of products, but I do like TreSemme's Weightless Body mousse (it works well if your hair is like mine - not very body-ish), and Garnier Fructis' Length and Strength line of shampoo and conditioner. The coolest thing I have ever found is the Garnier Fructis Length and Strength leave-in conditioner. That stuff is amazing! I always use it when I have used heat on my hair - it's supposed to prevent breakage, etc. It works for me - if you have a problem with a lot of breakage, or you want your hair to grow some more, try it out!
Speaking of heat, not only do apostolic women use a lot of products on their hair, but they also use a lot of heat-related things on their hair, like curling irons, hot sticks, hot rollers, hair dryers, straighteners, crimpers, etc. I just have a word of caution for these products - use them as sparingly as you can! Heat does damage hair, I promise you! Be careful when using heat products, ladies! Our hair is precious! When using a curling iron, make sure it isn't too hot, and don't leave your hair on it for too long (also don't burn yourself - not very comfortable!). When using hot sticks or hot rollers: these are actually probably the safest form of heat you can put on your hair, because they aren't just metal on hair! However, pulling your hair too tight on them can do damage. Hair dryers cause some disagreement on whether they are safe or not. I personally use my hair dryer more than I use my curlers. I'll let you draw your own conclusions on hair dryers. I can't say much about straighteners, either, since I don't have a need for one, but I can imagine that, just like curling irons, it would be necessary to make sure it's not frying your hair. I didn't intentionally leave crimpers to the last, but maybe that's best. I personally don't like the use of a crimper. Not that I don't like the look of the wavy/braid-ish hair, but I don't like the way the look is accomplished. Have you ever looked at a crimper closely? First off, most of them are metal, without some kind of covering to protect hair from burning. Secondly, if you think about it, the fibers of hair are stretchy a little - most everyone has experienced this when trying to comb out a knot - there is a bit of a flexibility there. However, a crimper takes hair and forces it to stretch and conform to a shape it is not used to taking. This puts a lot of tension on the hair - causing it to be more susceptible to breakage. I have a story bout that - a friend of mine started using a crimper a lot, and was playing with some kids, and one of the kids accidentally stepped on her hair as she was moving, and the hair just came out! Instead of stopping her from moving, like healthy hair would, it just broke off, leaving a big chunk of hair underneath the child's foot. I'm not telling people it's wrong to use a crimper or anything - but please be safe when using all these heated appliances!
So ladies, now it's your turn! I have been such a bad poster! Shame on me! Here I say I'm gonna try to post once a week, and that was a month and a half ago! Life has been busy...

Ok, so I have help with this blog - I admit it. The links I'm about to give y'all, I did not find. They were given to me by well-meaning people. :) I have no idea where this first link came from (my mother gave it to me, but I don't know who runs it). Perhaps the Button Bobbies aren't worth $7 (you decide), but it might be a good craft idea (not hard to do - buttons, bobby pins and a hot glue gun).
The second link is for a site run by an evangelist's daughter. I know she has a lot more stock, but only has posted a few pictures, so email her for additional info.

Hats, Hairdos, and Paisley
Philippians 4:5 - “Let your moderation be known unto all men, the Lord is at hand.” I'm sure we have all heard this verse before, usually in terms of not spending too much money, or eating too much, stuff like that. Moderation should also be practiced in clothing, as well. We as apostolics should not be known for our loud, flamboyant, “look at me!” clothing. Instead, our clothing should cause people to look to the Lord. We should be dressing in a nice, clean manner that associates us with God's people. With this as a background, I offer some suggestions:
Hats. Girls, hats are super cute! Some pastors preach that women should wear hats, so hats are not simply fashion statements for those ladies. However, for the people who are wearing hats simply because the hat is cute or something, here are some suggestions: If going to church – don't wear the big hats! They are extremely hard on the people sitting behind you; hard to see around, and hard to ignore! So go small for church! Save the big ones for special occasions (banquets, symphonies, etc). Also, stay away from hats that you don't want messed up – you never know what kinda service it's gonna be, and you don't want your hat to inhibit you in your worship! Plus, preachers may accidentally knock the hat to a funny angle when laying hands on you to pray! I was at a conference in the last few months, and was having a hard time seeing past some lady's gigantic hat!
Since conference styles are on my mind, what is with the hairstyles I have seen lately?? I think most of them are cute, or unique at least. But these do's that have strands of hair sticking straight out make no sense to me! Do these girls want us to think they haven't looked in a mirror?? Doesn't make sense to me...
Tryin not to be too negative here.
Saw some really cute outfits in the past few months! Goodness, there is a young lady that I have seen at a couple conferences that has such cute clothes! She must sew, or maybe her mother does – her clothes are so unique and adorable! I think she's going for the 40's type style – A-line dresses with detail, detail, detail! Big flowers or bows attached to the dress – so cute! Wish I had gotten a picture of some of her clothes! Like I have mentioned in past posts, the vintage look is in right now, so if you have the sewing skillage, get your Singer out and start that thing singing! Thrift stores are a great place to find vintage clothing you can personalize, or even finding patterns from eons ago. The hairstyles right now are really complementary to vintage clothes, and you could even wear a cute little hat on top that hairdo with that cute little dress! Man! I wish I could make a Singer sing!
Am I the only one that is totally loving paisley on guys right now?? Especially black with white paisley, but any complementary colors look awesome! There's just something sophisticated/dignified about paisley... I don't know what it is... I need to do some more guy-related posts, since I haven't really gotten into that much, but then I figure not many guys are reading my blog, so it wouldn't matter anyway :)

Happier Thoughts :)
I've been told by my "Council of Readers" that lately my blog has been more rant and less rave. As I think balance is a wonderful thing, I will attempt to keep away from writing an imbalance of negative and positive posts. That being said... Thrift Stores!
Have you ever walked into a Thrift Store and found a TOTAL STEAL??? You know what I mean - something super nice or just what you needed/wanted for a super awesome price. That has to be one of the coolest feelings in the world (aside from the Spiritual Feelings that are way more awesome, like the Holy Ghost, and Baptism, etc). I love Thrift Stores (as I've mentioned before, I adore bargain hunting). The only thing better than finding an awesome steal at a Thrift Store is finding the same thing in a department store for roughly the same price (it's new, instead of used). It's pretty cool when you find something new at the Thrift Store, too. Here's a few things to keep in mind when thrift-storing:
- If shopping for fun, without something specific in mind, look for unusual items that will help create fun, unique outfits. If the store has a Vintage rack, this is a great place for unique and potentially fashionable outfits (Vintage clothing is super in right now). Vintage clothing is usually more expensive, though
- Don't let your creativity be dampened by sizes. Lots of things can be altered to fit you better.
- Don't let yourself be excited by the prices - some things look awesome inside the store, but hang in your closet for years. If you can't imagine yourself wearing it, don't buy it
- Take a friend! It's much more fun shopping with a friend, and you can each take a side of the aisle and look
- After you take your goodies home, remember to wash everything thoroughly. Wash your hands after leaving the store, too
- If buying shoes, (which I haven't done, but obviously many people do), sanitize them with Lysol spray or some kind of disinfectant. If the shoes are washable (tennis shoes, etc), throw them in the washer. No sense in being careless about the kind of germs that can be hangin around in shoes that belonged to someone else.
Unfortunately, I've never found a coach or burberry purse for $2 at a thrift store, but I'm holding out! :)

Re: Pondering
I knew that last post "Pondering" would be a comment-attraction. Thanks to all of you who have commented! I read and appreciate all of your opinions! Please remember that everything posted here is merely my opinion, and it may not jive with yours (or your pastor's!). I don't have a problem with people disagreeing with me, as long as you can do it civilly! (I have published all the civil comments - if you would rather me take your comment off so people can't read it, let me know! Remember, you can always email me at apostolicfashion@gmail.com for a more private convo!) To respond to some of the comments: I haven't seen guy purses! do you have a picture you can send me? Are they, like, satchel/briefcase kind of things? While I understand the point about high heels (I like flats, personally, they are comfortable! lol), there haven't been many preachers (none that I can think of, offhand. If I'm wrong, let me know!), that have preached against heels! Though I have heard Elder Moody preach against stilettos, because they make one...uh... "wiggle" lol. Tights are awesome for staying warm! I wear them myself for warmth sometimes. The problem isn't when one wears tights, it's when the tights become merely a fashion statement, and really serve no needful purpose (such as keeping warm). The kinds of tights I was referring to are the wildly outlandish patterns that really draw attention to the legs. (Most of those patterns probably aren't even found on the warm type of tights). To respond to a comment I left unpublished - spellcheck is always helpful when trying to spell the words "Muslim" and "Amish"
